Active dog breeds and the commitment they need

A love of walks is a start. Working breeds need a fuller plan.

Activity includes thinking

Exercise, learning, problem-solving and rest are all parts of a sustainable routine. High-drive herding breeds often need purposeful engagement, not just access to a large garden.

Compare different kinds of active

A Labrador Retriever or Golden Retriever can enjoy active family routines with training and play. A Border Collie or Australian Shepherd brings a more intense working background and a substantial need for mental engagement.

Plan for ordinary weekdays

Be realistic about what you can offer when work is busy or the weather is unappealing. Include company, training support and arrangements for days you cannot provide the usual routine.

Match the individual, age and activity

A breed label does not establish that a dog is ready for running, endurance exercise or a sport. Puppies, older dogs and dogs with health needs require individual plans. Ask the rescue, responsible breeder and veterinarian for guidance.
