Choosing a dog for a small home

Space matters. Daily routine, toilet access and noise matter too.

Look beyond the floor plan

A small dog can be highly active; a larger adult dog can be settled indoors. Start with the activity, enrichment and companionship you can provide, then consider room for rest and safe movement.

Plan the everyday logistics

Think about stairs, lifts, toilet access, shared walls and space for quiet rest. A puppy or dog with additional needs may require more frequent outings. Check the rules for your home before committing.

Three useful comparisons

A Miniature Poodle has a practical size but substantial grooming needs. A Whippet needs safe opportunities for activity. An adult Greyhound may enjoy a quieter indoor routine, but individual history and needs matter.

Ask about noise and separation

Breed tendencies can help start the conversation, but an individual dog’s behaviour, training and environment determine the day-to-day experience. Arrange company and toilet breaks; no breed guarantees comfortable long periods alone.
